Help & FAQ

Frequently asked questions about how eWitness works, what data we collect, and how your media is protected.

What is eWitness?

  • A mobile camera app that allows you to take pictures and videos and instantly store the proof of location, time, and a unique identification/fingerprint of the media.
  • The proof is stored in a database and sent to the blockchain (Avalanche testnet).
  • This process creates a digital alibi for the media, proving its authenticity to anyone who needs to know.

Where are my blockchain transactions?

  • Your transactions are currently on the Avalanche Network TestNet.
  • Use this link to access your transactions and transactions from all eWitness users.

What personal information do I give away to the eWitness team when I sign up?

  • Nothing.
  • Technically speaking, when you sign up for eWitness using your Google account, we can get your profile information directly from Google. However, we decided we have no use for that information so we don't ask Google for it.

Where are my pictures and videos stored? Are they backed up on eWitness servers?

  • Your pictures and videos are stored on your phone in a folder called eWitness. Even after you uninstall eWitness, your folder will remain on your phone.
  • We don't back up your pictures or videos to our servers because that would be expensive and we are not in the business of selling or otherwise using your media in any way.

What information do I give to eWitness when I use the app?

  • When you use eWitness to take pictures or record videos, your location, time, pseudo-identification, and a unique SmartHash fingerprint of the picture or video is stored in the eWitness backend database and on the blockchain. This serves as a digital forensics artifact for your media that proves its authenticity.
  • Your media stays on your phone. We don't sync your media to our cloud servers. Remember — if you delete your media, the digital forensics artifact is not automatically deleted.
  • Nothing can be deleted from the blockchain, but if you request it, we will delete the digital forensics artifact from our database.
